How did you get into legal recruitment?
My career has always been client centric, creating options for people, whether that's to grow or resolve an issue. During my time in London I worked for an apprentice provider, where I got to see first hand what it's like to help young people get into work and start their career. Moving back up to Liverpool I knew recruitment was the next logical step and the legal world has always intrigued me. Combining the two made sense.
What do you do at Thornton Legal?
There are two sides to recruitment, helping clients source candidates for specific roles and advising candidates on what their next move could look like. I look after both qualified and non-qualified across Greater Manchester and Lancashire. My main practice areas are Property, Employment, Litigation, Private Client, Clinical Negligence and Corporate although I do work in other disciplines from time to time
What advice would you give a law firm looking to hire in 2024?
Be decisive. If you like someone make them an offer, don’t mess around. The legal industry has been a candidate driven market for some time. The power is often on the candidates side, as they normally have a couple of options. One of the most constructive things you can do as an employer is provide clear feedback on the CVs you receive; this helps build and mold a search to find the right person.
What makes you a good recruiter?
I listen to what a candidate wants rather trying to fit them into into an opportunity that may not be the right long-term fit. I advise rather than tell and am honest - it's important not to hide anything, whether that's about a particular client or feedback on a CV or interview.
Tell us about your hobbies?
I love sport, with football and boxing being the main two. I watch both, play football and have had a couple of amateur boxing bouts. I also like being outdoors, usually camping or fishing. I think I know how fish but other people will tell you otherwise!
Who is your favourite band?
In terms of bands it has to be either U2 or Kings of Leon, my music taste is varied from rap, 90s dance or house music.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I've done quite a lot of travelling, and I lived away from Liverpool for about 7 years in Melbourne, Toronto, Auckland and London. I also played as a goalkeeper at semi pro level, after time spent in the Liverpool and Everton academies.
A typical weekend for me is…
very different to what is used to be! I've recently bought a house and have a baby on the way. So typically I will find a pointless DIY exercise to take me hours which normally involves breaking something and trying to fix it.
