Thornton Legal is working with an established regional law firm looking to recruit an experienced Employment Solicitor for its Chester office.

The firm has an established employment team across its other offices and is now looking to develop its presence in Chester. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys employment law, is confident managing their own work and would welcome the chance to take on greater responsibility.

You don't need to be a Senior Associate or have a particular number of years' PQE. The firm is more interested in the experience you've gained and what you're capable of doing.

The role

You'll be the firm's dedicated employment lawyer in Chester, working closely with an established employment team elsewhere in the business.

The work is varied and includes day-to-day HR advice, employment disputes, tribunal proceedings and advising employers on a broad range of workplace issues.

Alongside managing your own matters, you'll have the opportunity to help develop the employment practice locally.

The firm has identified Chester as an area for growth and has a plan to support the successful candidate in building relationships with local businesses and professional contacts.

You'll work with colleagues across the Chester office and the firm's marketing team, with time specifically allocated to networking and business development.

Importantly, you won't be expected to arrive with an existing client following or generate a full caseload from day one.

Over time, the intention is to develop the employment offering further, with the potential for the successful candidate to take responsibility for a growing team.

What we're looking for

We're interested in speaking with employment solicitors who have sufficient experience to manage their own matters with minimal supervision.

You'll ideally have:

  • Good experience across contentious and non-contentious employment law.
  • Experience advising employers on everyday HR and employment matters.
  • The confidence to manage client relationships independently.
  • An interest in developing new professional relationships and becoming more involved in business development.
  • A willingness to work regularly from the Chester office.

Previous business development experience would be useful, but it isn't essential. The firm is happy to support someone who wants to develop this side of their career.

We're also open to speaking with lawyers who have qualified more recently but gained substantial employment law experience beforehand, including those who have worked in specialist employment advisory organisations.

Why consider the move?

For someone working in a larger team, this could be an opportunity to take on more responsibility and develop their own profile.

You'll have the independence to manage your work and build relationships, without being left to establish a practice entirely on your own.

There's an established employment team to provide support, a wider Chester office to work alongside and a genuine commitment from the firm to developing employment work locally.

The opportunity could particularly appeal to someone who enjoys the legal work but feels ready for greater autonomy and a more visible role within a firm.

Salary and benefits

A competitive salary and benefits package is available, depending on experience.

The position will be based primarily in Chester, reflecting the importance of building relationships within the local business community.
